Mergers - Case 18
E.CA was asked to assess the potential competitive effects of Oracle-Sun Microsystems merger. We identified the three main concerns of potential adverse effects from the merger as: (1) competitive effects caused by potential foreclosure of Java programming language, (2) concerns about future of MySQL specifically and market for relational database management systems (RDBMS) more generally, and (3) potential competitive effects caused by the creation of Oracle-Sun fully integrated vertical stack. E.CA submitted a white paper with more detailed description of these possible theories of harm to the case team. In the second stage of the merger analysis, we performed an empirical analysis of database usage. The merger has gone to Phase 2 in both the US and EU.
